Ultima Ratio Regum

Ultima ratio regum is latin for “last resort of kings” and the popularized by Louis XIV as “last argument of kings,” casted onto cannons near the breech. Here, though, it is the title of the fantasy novel written by Joe Abercrombie. I found this abandoned book under an onramp near downtown. As with most of the ramps, there are makeshift homeless lofts in these nooks. I haven’t read any of Abercrombie’s books, but I know some friends who are fans of his trilogy, and they report them as dark and dystopic. Nevertheless, it was an interesting find.

As for processing, this was a hand-held bracketed shot since it was in a pocket of an onramp. I merged the three and processed in HDR Efex using the “texture” selection for method.
