South Louisiana has always been a major gathering area for migrating hummingbirds, but this year it has been rather exceptional, more like swarming. Some of the species are headed to Mexico, taking a long ride over the gulf to get there. So I guess these guys are all carb loading as a marathon runner does the day before.
I took this while visiting my wife’s family on the farm. At the time, I was lacking in great lens speed and this feeder was hanging in a shaded area. It’s difficult to get close to these guys and they are never in the same spot for more than a split-second. I managed a few close-ups but liked this one as it shows off the migration a bit more.
