The Old Lion King

I’m not quite ready to abandon the animal theme. When visiting zoos, I’ve had the uncanny ability of rarely seeing lions. Either it is feeding time or they are zonked out sleeping in the furthest, most obscuring reach of the exhibit. The rare times they have been close, they never will look my way but this guy gave me a haphazard glance.

I always have ambiguous feelings when visiting zoos, and the more cynical ones always occur at the big cat exhibits. They always seem like a shell of themselves or the cats do that mad, feverish walk back and forth in front of the glass. I did attend some inside zoo camps as a kid and learned that most of the big cats in zoos are rescues from negligent owners or shady circuses. And in that respect, depending on the zoo, it makes it seem a bit more redeeming.
